At Tawa Montessori Preschool we focus on the child's natural love for nature, and the tendency to want to touch, hold, and care for all things living and nonliving. A gardening programme is an excellent way of learning about the magical cycle of growth. The children plant seeds, watch them sprout and care for the plants. They are able to look at the cycles of life close up, appreciating the miracles of nature and experiencing a sense of wonder.
Being in the outdoors, experiencing nature every day, the children learn that they are never alone, that they are connected with the strength and support of nature. They learn that they have a choice in how they act in relation to the earth and just knowing they have a choice in their behaviors can be incredibly empowering and lead to wonderful things. A garden fosters a caring attitude and sense of responsibility towards living thing, it grows more then just plants, it grows people.
Young children feel a natural kinship with animals.At Tawa Montessori Preschool they learn to care for a wide range of animas in an atmosphere of love and respect for life. The children collect fresh eggs from the chickens, they grow carrots for the rabbit and silverbeet for the guinea pigs. Our animals are friendly and used to the children. Many of them are born and raised at the pre-school. They have spacious day and night shelters, and sometimes roam around our garden, curiously checking out the children's activities while the children curiously observe them.
