Experiences during the early years shape the values and attitudes toward the world. Children carry these with them throughout their life. This is the time to keep alive the child's true instinct for what is beautiful. This is also the time to awaken children's natural curiosit and inspire a sense of wonder.
Many children today are increasingly removed from or frightened by the wonders of the natural world, unaware of its power and beauty. With modern urban and suburban development, natural, wild areas are less available. Our culture is fast-paced and places importance on going, doing and becoming, and less on playing, exploring and discovering. Children are overscheduled and increasingly plugged in to electronic devices and media. Their access to the outdoors and the natural world is becoming increasingly limited or nonexistent. Our pre-school becomes the place where they spend their outside time during the early years. The outdoor environment at our pre-school becomes their outdoor world, the place they visit day after day. It is this place where they develop a relationship with the natural world, where they create their memories and their childhood. Giving young children the time, space, and freedom to explore in a natural environment contributes immensely to their growth and development.
