Tawa Montessori Preschool is a small enviro preschool for children 3-6 years old, based on the guiding principles of Maria Montessori, Te Whaariki and Enviroschools. We are a sustainable community of parents, teachers and children working in partnership, sharing strong common values and goals. We embrace the heritage of Aotearoa, inclusive of all cultures.
Our belief is that:
The Child is the personification of innocence, with their own unique sparkle, and unfolding spirit, capable of giving and receiving unconditional love. Only an emotional satisfied child can be absorbed in an activity and unfold their genius.
Play is sacred and the only way highest intelligence of human kind can unfold. In order to unfold the genius within, the child is given free time and space to explore, inquire and discover, free from undue adult intervention. Purposeful engagement, joyful experiences, and natural consequences are a part of learning and empower the child to succeed.
Childhood is a journey that shapes the child for the rest of their life. In order to keepsake childhood, we give the child time to develop according to nature’s plan in a caring and supportive environment. Each child is acknowledged as free and equal human being, in an atmosphere of peace and calmness, founded on respectful, trusting and reciprocal relationships. Precious childhood memories based on authentic experiences and natural connections are our gift to the child. The inspiration and awakening of awe and wonder for nature and its miracles are part of the child’s daily experiences and foster a relationship with Papatuanuku, exposing the child to whanaugatanga, the inter-relatedness of people and all of nature. Connecting the child with nature and nurturing their sense of wonder is the source of all spiritual growth.
The Environment is crucial to the development of the child. Our Environment is based on the principles of beauty and simplicity. Our ongoing task is to appreciate each child's unfolding spirit and to create, enhance, and enrich an environment that will, effectively and positively lead the child to a love of learning and respect for life, embraced in nature. Learning is a hands-on experience and each child is encouraged to think for themselves. The Montessori philosophy guides us to create a balance between freedom, order and responsibility, nurturing and stimulating the spontaneous curiosity within the child.
