A Space with a Soul

A Place of Opportunities

Young children are curious about the world around them. At Tawa Montessori Preschool the outdoor environment is as open-ended and simple as possible. It is designed to be a child's space. It is integrated with the indoor classroom with one sense of place and identity, a part of the classroom rather than a retreat from it. There is a variety of trees, herbs and shrubs and grasses that the children can explore and interact with.

balancing

They can search for caterpillars or worms. They can see, touch and feel the colours, textures, shapes and sizes of the leafs. They can inspect anything tiny - flowers, insects, holes in the ground, little seeds and baby animals. They learn that those tiny green pills turn into grapes, small purple buds turn into blueberries and those tree flowers turn into apples.

Driftwood pieces from our beach are used as balancing, climbing and sitting areas. Rocks and boulders from the local river bank are used as stepping stones, sitting or hideaways for bugs and creatures.

With all these local elements, the children get a first hand feel of their local natural environment. Contact us for more information.
